Much hay has been made over EA's Dante's Inferno generously borrowing gameplay elements from the God of War series. While God of War III Senior Producer Steve Caterson is aware of Dante Inferno's existence, he's also not particularly troubled by it.
“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but from our standpoint, we're running our own race,” said Caterson. “We're trying to outdo ourselves and we're our own worst critics and we often beat ourselves up. We take a lot of pride in what we do and we want to do the best we can on the games we make and we don't want to leave anything on the table. We want everyone to have the same experience, one that we all agree on, and when you put the game down we want to be able to look you in the eye and say, 'We gave it our all.'”
“For us, it's always been about previous games we've worked on,” he continued. “Nobody came into the office one day with a game someone else made and said, 'Look at this, we need to have this in our game.' It's always been about outdoing ourselves; with God of War II, we had to outdo the Hydra and I think we did it with the Colossus battle, and this time, we had to be even bigger than that with God of War III. I'd like to think we succeeded.”

wow! This guy has no fear of blasphemy. Let me see this game is GOD of war. It is about GODS (wicked ones but gods). Then he takes a quote from Jesus saying "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" and twist it to scariest? It's just a game, so why do you have to go that far to hype it? It's only a game. There was no reason to boldly twist a quote of Jesus.
Then he pretends to be his worst critique? huh? Sounds like your getting a big head to me. Pumping is one thing but this is something over the top.

Ha ha, glad you're entertained indysurfn. :) Just to note, Caterson wasn't being arrogant in his claims, just truthful - the last two console entries for God of War were quite excellent and that was the standard that the team was holding itself too.

I don't know what Indysurfn is talking about. The only thing I kind of take issue with is, “Nobody came into the office one day with a game someone else made and said, 'Look at this, we need to have this in our game". Now the reason I only 'kind of' take issue with it is because I just played GOW II but before hand I was watching the special features DVD and I remember them saying they looked at other games and Movies for ideas.
Then again the guys who worked on that or said that might not be involved with the development of GOW III. IDK, i'm not a movie expert but when I think of lining up things so light can bounce off or climbing a chain I think of Legend with Tom Cruise. Not important but that's what popped into my head.

The series was, as a whole, inspired by certain epic movies, especially the original Clash of the Titans. Rygar: The Legendary Adventure was also very important. However, at this point the series is much better established - Caterson wasn't worried about Dante's Inferno or any other action game, he just wanted to live up to God of War standards.
