Sony Reportedly Working on Kinect-Like Device

Posted February 21, 2012 by Ben Strauss

A new patent has revealed Sony’s exploration into full-body motion control, with striking similarities to the Kinect.  The new device references previous EyeToy patents, giving an idea of Sony’s evolution into a full motion type controller.

The patent specifically applies to a “user-driven three-dimensional interactive gaming environment,” that would have a device feeding into the PS3.  That device would then scan the player and the room, and create a playable area that would work very similarly to the Kinect.

The patent also says that this is “An invention [providing] for affording a real-time three-dimensional interactive environment using a depth sensing device. The invention includes obtaining depth values indicating distances from one or more physical objects in a physical scene to a depth sensing device.”

Interestingly enough, the similarities to the EyeToy do not end with the reference, as Sony designer Richard Marks was the one who filed the new patent.  Marks was mainly responsible for the Move peripheral device currently being used to combat the Kinect in motion control gaming.
