Sony R&D Manager Explains Why Natal 'Didn't Really Enable New Experiences'

Posted March 30, 2010 by David Radd

While thePlayStation Move and Project Natal technologies were originally shown off for the first time almost simultaneously at E3 2009, Sony was pretty aware of what Microsoft was going to announce. 3DV Systems, an Isreali company who developed the base technology behind Natal, originally showed off their stuff to Sony, who passed on it in favor of their Move controller.

Sony R&D manager Richard Marks liked the Natal technology, but his superiors apparently didn't see it as useful to gaming as other options. “We tried a lot of different 3D cameras. I love the 3D camera technology; personally, I like the technology part of it,” said Marks on the Engadget Show [thanks PlayStation Lifestyle]. “We worked closely with our game teams at what it would enable, and it enabled making the things we already did with EyeToy more robust, but it didn’t really enable as many new experiences as what we were hoping it would enable, so it made the things we were already able to do a little bit more robust — which is good — but it adds a lot of cost and it didn’t enable some of the other experiences we wanted to achieve.”

Sony has already put all their cards out on the table for Move and we're eager to see Microsoft do the same with Natal and prove that its capabilities match its promise.

LOL what i dont get is when a story come out about Microsoft Natal everybody ties it to Sony Move . Do everyone know that Natal and Move work operate different ? there not the same so please stop saying both are going to raise or fall if one not successful lol that BS talk. Let also give DR Richard Marks comment more fact then fiction since he more in the know to this technology then me you or this blog site lol you can compair Natal to Eyetoy then you can Move or Wiimote also if this technology is so great then why Sony and Nintendo pass up on it? they had this technology before Microsoft.

So Sony thinks if they had upgraded their epic fail Eyetoy it would still be fail. So logically MS's device developed in Israel would also have to be fail. This then is why Sony is making the PSPgo right? Because they have such an awesome lock on RD and consumer wants and needs. I have been reading a shocking number of news posts coming from Sony talking about how much MS's Natal will suck and not near as many talking about how awesome Move is. If I was a Sony investor I would be very worried about now that Sony understands they are still in trouble.

So Natal won't enable any "new" experiences but a blatant ripoff of the Wii remote will? Thats what you call irrational rationalization.

@ pawwof and 1 2 know one saying Natal will fail will it bring games to the table yes but will it bring a new experinces no because what Natal showing we all ready seen from other company and developer . Let be fair the game Microsoft shown at E3 with the lady hitting the balls with her hand and feet was all ready done with the Eyetoy lol you couldn't use your feet in that game but it the same concept so where the new experince ? am sure Natal will have a FPS game where you can use your hand as a gun but where the new experince in that we been playing that way when we were six lol oh yeah were doing in front of a T V so that the new experince ? sorry nothing new about that . Nintendo and Sony had this technology before Microsoft and they pass on it lol kind of make you wonder why lol am listening to there experinces with this technology since they been in it alot longer then Microsoft.
