Sony: PSPgo Launch Propels Hardware Sales Up 300 Percent

While there's been criticism and mixed reactions from retail about the PSPgo, Sony has certainly been positive about the system's release. They indicated that the system's sales have jumped 120 percent after its release in the U.K. and now Kotaku has received similarly upbeat news from Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of Corporate Communications and Social Media for SCEA.

Seybold says that the device has "generated strong consumer interest in the overall PSP platform and the PlayStation Network's digital content offering" and that certain retail chains have seen a 300 percent lift in PSP hardware sales lift week-over-week and helped generate a "significant increase in revenue for PlayStation Network, driven by a 200 percent lift in PSP game downloads purchased from PlayStation Store."

"With several blockbuster games launching digitally and on UMD in the coming weeks — from LittleBigPlanet to Assassin's Creed Bloodlines — we expect this momentum to continue and look forward to a strong holiday season for both the PSPgo and PSP-3000," he added.

Seybold declined to give any particular sales numbers relating to the PSP platform in general or the PSPgo specifically.

I have to wonder about the actual hardware sales. Is it merely renewed interest in the PSP platform as a whole (and thus possibly more sales of the PSP-3000 ), or specific interest in the PSPGo? It's easy to see that the rise in digital sales would stem from PSPGo sales since the unit lacks UMD support at all, and that would be more telling of how well the hardware is doing.

Still, the biggest concern I have with this new SKU is whether or not more killer-app, AAA PSP titles will be forthcoming, or if this will just be a shiny new toy requiring a re-purchase of Dissidia, Chains of Olympus, and Star Ocean 1.
