Sony PS Vita Sales Nosedive in Japan, Down 57 Percent

Posted January 18, 2012 by Ben Strauss

Sony’s ambitious little Vita has not been receiving that warm a welcome in a land traditionally dominated by handheld devices.  The latest report puts week-over-week sales for the new Vita at only 18,361 units, representing a drop of 57%.

Things could be looking better for Sony in Japan, as the Vita has only managed to take in a total of 500,000 units since launching four weeks ago.  This number would appear to be far below expectations, and much less than the 3DS’s numbers in the same time period, but Sony has maintained that the portable is "selling to forecast."

Week 4 sales continue a tremendous free-fall pattern in sales statistics, with the 57% drop falling in line with last week’s 41.2% drop.  Week 2 saw a dismal 77.7% drop from week 1.  While Nintendo did see similar problems in launching the 3DS, the Vita is simply losing ground before it was even able to make a foothold; Sony’s Vita is lagging close to 200,000 units behind the 3DS from the same time period.
