Sony has talked in the past about the upcoming God of War III marking the end of the trilogy. That doesn't mean the franchise as a whole is coming to an end, however. Sony knows how important the God of War franchise has become to the PlayStation business, and you can bet they'll be making more adventures for Kratos.
Sony Santa Monica's Director of Product Development John Hight, speaking with Gamervision [thanks Edge], commented, “This is not the end of God Of War. This is definitely the end of the trilogy, but we’re going to continue to do God Of War games. We’re going to be very careful about what we do; we’re the keepers of the franchise and we don’t want to see it ruined or polluted.”
God of War III is the first of the series to be made from the ground up for PS3, and anyone who's played the E3 demo (included in God of War Collection and the District 9 Blu-ray) can tell you that it's a huge leap forward in detail. Hight said that the team size grew from 60 members to over 130 for the third game. The team has been working on including unique elements that simply wouldn't have been possible on PS2.
"We really wanted to take our time, rebuild our engine, take advantage of every ounce of the PS3 tech, so one of the things we’ve been showing… is our dynamic environments, which is literally a living breathing creature, a titan in this case, that is a level in and of itself that you can navigate across, battle other creatures on, have puzzles on – it’s like a real moving environment. No other game that I’m aware of actually has that level of technology,” said Hight.
