Sony Patents Hint at Motion Controller Possibilities

Posted December 8, 2009 by David Radd

It is well known at this point that Sony is working on a PS3 motion control device (which still remains without an official name) for release sometime in 2010, but it seems as though Sony might have more than just a simple wand device working in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye in mind.

Sony’s motion controller: more than meets the eye.

In a patent uncovered by Kotaku, Sony is considering several possible configurations and combinations for the motion controller. A few of the patents detail add-ons that allow the motion controller to better replace a DualShock 3 with the attachment of an extra device, while others suggest interchangeable parts on the end, like a maraca or a baseball bat. Other possibilities include a biometric sensor, a microphone or a control face plate that could be swapped out.

While all, some or none of these ideas may ultimately come to fruition, it's clear that Sony has ambitions for their motion controlling device beyond just looking like a wand with a glowing ping-pong ball on the end.

yea...way to go sony, Thats how you DONT copy nintendo...lol Sonys gameplan for their controllers the last 15 yrs has been "double what ever nintendo has done".

SNES Shoulder buttons. Sony doubled it with four.

Analog stick, Sony added TWO sticks in the dual analog controller.

Rumble motor, Sony adds TWO rumble motors intheir controllers. then pays hefty fees for patent infrigments later on. cliams rumble is "last gen..then after paying fines, adds them back in at a premium cost.

Wii remote with motion plus....TWO wands for PS3...

Its a little sad, that their route is so simliar, because for the most part i know all this will result in for the first 2 yrs or so is quick dirty Wii ports and LOADS of mini games... At least Microsoft is doing more a different take on motion control by making it more than just an eye toy....But still i have to laugh that bothcompnaies that were laughing and calling Wii a fad and motion controls a Gimmick, now are onthe exact same train Nintendo has been on four three yrs. usually its hard to get on a bandwagon after its started moving at full speed. but here we are...

LOL dude it's really not about doing something difficult or different it's really about getting the causal gamer to buy ps3 . I have a 360 and ps3 and of the two sony have the best chance to grab the causal gamer market . like it or not the causal gamer are growing and sony want a cut of that pie . MS is going to have to show more but what hurt them at the end is that it have no control or device and believe or not causal gamer want that also let be fair sony had the idea and had motion control and body tracking from the ps2 .

no they had an Eye toy if camera play is something you consider an innovation see the Gameboy camera before it, All im saying is these are the two companies that said it was hype and gimmicks, it would be a short lived bubble, and it was a fad...yet they are on the same boat after. I understand the why, im just pointing out the irony that its a blatant ripoff again. Sony has in all honesty innovated on making a stronger graphics processer this time around, but as we have seen throughout Video game history the Strongest Console has NEVER ben in first place innovating will continue to keep you afloat for the time Nintendo has been around they know how to make the changes the industry follows, not the other way around.
