The next EverQuest game has been announced at the annual Fan Faire by Sony Online Entertainment. The next installment in the series has only been hinted at, but EverQuest Next will remind fans of the original Everquest 1 rather than the sequel, which has just turned to a free-to-play model. SOE president John Smedley revealed two pieces of “in-game art” at the event, and gave a few vague details about the game.

EverQuest Next will be a “reimagining” of the series, rather than a sequel. It will have a “more stylized” setting and atmosphere, and the game will “deliver the story lines and role in another way than clicking through NPC dialog boxes.” Smedley also stated that the game is being designed “from the ground up with PVP in mind.”
Details about the game otherwise remain scarce. The two pieces of artwork are all that have been provided thus far. Smedley stated that over the next couple of days, Fan Faire is intended more to be about collecting player feedback than detailing more about the game.

That actually sounds quite interesting. I really enjoyed the EverQuest universe. Played EQ1 for a couple of years, and played EQ2 for a while. I thought both games were well done for their time. If WoW didn't exist I think EQ2 would have been a far bigger success than it has been. There were actually a lot of good, fun things in the game. For example, the collections were a unique (from my experience at least) and interesting element in an MMO.

I remember early on (within months after release) some considered EQII to be the superior experience, but WoW maintained its momentum far better. Despite having a veteran development team and a name well known in MMO circles, WoW was probably better designed for a mass market audience.
