Sony Online Entertainment Hit With Layoffs

Posted July 17, 2009 by James Brightman

The video game industry has seen better days. Sales in June were down for the fourth consecutive month, and saw the biggest decline since 2000, and companies are constantly reevaluating their business to see how they can adjust cost structure to become more efficient during this economic recession. The latest company to make cuts is Sony Online Entertainment.

A spokesperson has provided IndustryGamers with the following statement:

"In a move to increase operational efficiency and reduce costs, Sony Online Entertainment has eliminated 5% of its full-time workforce, equaling 41 people.  SOE looks forward to continuing its leadership role in the online games industry as it celebrates the highly successful launch of Free Realms, the 10-year commemoration of its ground-breaking EverQuest franchise, and the continued performance of the company’s other games."

Thanks for the story. I worked at SOE for 6 years through 2006. I hope none of my friends got the axe. I'll have to check with them

No problem. I hope your friends are fine. I definitely know the feeling of being laid off, but my getting axed allowed the creation of IndustryGamers (crisis brings opportunity... blah, blah)

I was laid off from SOE a few years back when our Mobile Dept. merged with them. What was a team of 30-40 turned into a team of 5-6
