With the PSP Go set to launch on October 1, many current PSP owners are wondering what they'll do with their existing library of UMD games (besides continuing to play them on the old PSP model). We had hoped that Sony would offer some sort of conversion program so that the UMD games could be transferred digitally to the PSP Go, and indeed Sony said it was evaluating such an idea after they announced the PSP Go back at E3, but for now that option's been removed from the table.
Kotaku brings word that Sony Computer Entertainment America has scrapped the idea, at least for now, for a full-on UMD conversion program. "We were evaluating a UMD conversion program, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time," a spokesperson said.
In the meantime, Sony just dropped the price on the old PSP in Japan and announced a program for Europe that will at least make it more enticing to give up the old PSP in favor of the Go. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe will be giving away three free games to new PSP Go owners. All they have to do is register for their three free games by accessing the PlayStation Network with their older PSPs with a UMD in the drive. There's still no word on whether this PSP Go rewards program or the PSP-3000 price drop will occur in America. IndustryGamers pinged SCEA but have yet to hear back.

I had serioulsy considered giving up my old PSP in favor of the Go. This news, however, doesn't make it interesting anymore. I think it's a terrible move, I'm sure a lot of people will not switch to the new hardware due to this.
