Update: As a response to the furor and confusion caused by the subscription quote, SCEI CEO Kaz Hirai issued a statement that seemingly confirms that services that are free now will remain free in future.
“SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network,” said Hirai. “Especially in the online area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services.”
Original Story: While many consider Xbox Live to be superior to the PlayStation Network, the latter’s free online play is a definite point in its favor. However, hidden amongst a voluminous Media/Investor Conference presentation uncovered by VG247 (which talks about returning Sony’s game business to profitability by 2010/2011) is a bullet point: “new revenue stream from subscription.”
When asked what this announcement could mean, Joystiq received the official response, "We have not made any formal announcements on a subscription based service. We're looking into a variety of options."
Before people work themselves into too much of a lather, this is certainly no guarantee that online play will suddenly become subscription-only on the PS3. There are possibilities that it could refer to game or movie rental subscriptions, MMOs, or other “premium” services beyond what they are already offering (similar to what Qore is doing right now). It could even refer to the establishment of a new Sony-wide network service, also outlined in the same presentation.
