Sony Looks to 2011 for PlayStation Profitability, Plans to 'Upgrade PS3s to 3D'

Sony's PlayStation 3 has been a huge investment for the company. Thanks to manufacturing efficiencies and the falling cost of components, Sony's managed to bring down the console's total cost (which led to the price cut to $299), but the PS3 is on track to post its second straight billion dollar loss in the current fiscal year ending next March.

According to reports from the AP and Reuters, Sony Chief Executive Howard Stringer spoke about his company's turnaround plan today at Sony's Tokyo headquarters. Importantly, he said that Sony plans to be profitable in its gaming and flat-panel TV businesses by the fiscal year ending March 2011.

Part of the turnaround plan will rely on digital devices as well as 3-D technology. "This is a new Sony. The new team here is as digitally connected as our devices," said Stringer. PlayStation Network will no doubt factor into Sony's big digital push. The company recently added Netflix and Facebook and continues to enhance its video offerings.

As for 3-D technology, Sony executive Hiroshi Yoshioka said that it's "a pillar of our strategy," adding, "We are all getting geared up on this theme." Not only is Sony working on 3-D TVs, but the company also stated that all PS3s could be upgraded to 3-D with firmware updates.

Details on the PS3 3-D plans remain scarce for now, but the possibilities could be very interesting, especially when combined with Sony's upcoming PlayStation motion controller.
