Exclusive: First Details of U.S. PS3 Slim Marketing Blitz

The announcement of the new PS3 Slim at $299, although expected, was one of the most impactful announcements that the video gaming industry will see all year, so naturally a huge advertising campaign will follow it. While many of the PS3 ads in recent years have been serious in their tone with a harder edge, Sony Computer Entertainment America is taking a different strategy this time. IndustryGamers has been provided with complete video of the numerous TV spots (unfortunately, we're only allowed to share stills... see below). Update: Sony's PlayStation.Blog has now posted some of the commercials. Check 'em out.

Meet Kevin Butler (no, not the former Bears kicker).

If you remember the MLB '09 The Show ads from earlier this year, with the Red Sox's Dustin Pedroia sparring with "Director of Game Accuracy" Kevin Butler, the nature of these ads will be immediately apparent. Sony is reaching out to a broad audience with these ads, and even takes the time to poke fun at themselves and fervent industry watchers. Overall, we feel these ads are a huge step up from the old "white room" PS3 ads (the crying baby version of which made our list of Video Game Ads Gone Wrong).

The PS3 isn't $299, what are you talking about?

Stay tuned to IndustryGamers for our exclusive interview with Peter Dille, SCEA's senior vice president of marketing and PlayStation Network, and Eric Hirshberg, president and chief creative officer of ad agency Deutsch LA. [NOTE: Our full interview with Dille and Hirshberg is now live. Please read it here.]

But can it do the dishes?

These ads look great. I'm thinking this will finally resonate with consumers.

Hi, Thanks for sharing these photos with us. Any confirmation on when these videos will be available online? When will the ads be seen on T.V. as well ?

It will be nice to see a little humor from Sony, and I think it will work better than the usually very Japanese and super serious ads.

That Mount Rushmore ad in the background of the second picture would look pretty good hanging in Times Square.

Yes... hehehe... hahaha... hohoho...
...but 299$ = 209€

In EEUU 299$ OK, nice price but in Europe 299€... Why???

One dollar is not one euro!

This does not make me laugh...

THis is the first ad campaign for the PS3 that actually works. One can only hope they have learned from their horrible past mistakes.

@ Bryan "better than the usually very Japanese and super serious ads."
Actually those ads in question were made by Chiat/Day.
Who, coincidentally, is no longer their ad agency.

This is a bad advertisement from Sony! They must apologise for this to all Nigerians.
This is a bad reputation of NIGERIA.

@Adeboye I wouldn't take it personally – it's not so much saying anything about Nigeria as it is about email scams out there (mostly propagated by Americans I'd bet) where they claim to be millionaires from some African nation and say they'll transfer money to your account if you help them get out of the country.

Glad they are keeping the guy. Anytime I watch a sports show and a Pedroia highlight comes up the broadcaster usually always makes a comment from the commercial. If it is as good as that one then this will be good for them.
