Sony Has 'No Desire' to Release PS4 Yet

Posted August 22, 2011 by Ben Strauss

In maintaining their 10-year lifetime stance, Sony has once again affirmed that a next generation console from the company is not something they are seriously considering at this point of time.  Sony Worldwide Studios lead Shuhei Yoshida noted that the company simply will not move to another console until developers are not able to churn out improvements on current gen platforms.

"Looking at the platform cycle, when the platform becomes something game developers are not able to improve their creations with, that's the time we have to really seriously consider shifting to the next generation," Yoshida said to Eurogamer.

"As far as we are concerned, we have no desire now to do that [release a new home console]," Yoshida said.

Desire or not, the gaming world is always a rapidly moving thing, and Nintendo is once again first out the gate with a next generation console.  Even more insistent are the various rumors going around that both Microsoft and Sony will in fact be showcasing their next console at E3 2012

"Gamers always need something new and more exciting. If they're seeing just similar types of games coming year after year, they will quickly lose their interest," noted Yoshida. "Looking like that, when you see games coming out on PS3, both the traditional type of games as well as new kind of games using PS Move, there is a lot more we can do from the game development standpoint."

"So as long as we and our developers can create new experiences that are more exciting to consumers, I see no need to transition into newer generation."
