Sony Worldwide Studios Boss Talks NGP and 3D

Posted June 3, 2011 by Ben Strauss

Details on the new handheld from Sony are still forthcoming, and will likely be detailed in excess at E3 next week, but several questions still remain.  Discussing the possibilities that the NGP offers, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide boss Shuhei Yoshida says that 3D is still on Sony’s mind.

“Our studio worked very closely with hardware groups to design NGP, so we looked at every single component in terms of choices of display,” said Yoshida to Edge.  “We could have had 3D stereoscopic display instead of a 5-inch OLED – there’s pros and cons – and obviously we decided to go with the latter.”

“But we knew that those [3D] display technologies would advance every day, every month. And especially the naked-eye stereoscopic technologies – it’s such an early technology, that’s going to advance very quickly and people will see it adapted in tablets and smartphones.”

Ultimately, the decision came down to providing a game experience that was enriching from Sony’s point of view.  “Our decision was based on what we're trying to create in terms of robust gaming experience, without the additional cost of goods to provide the naked-eye stereoscopic 3D.”

While it may be the best choice for Sony not to go with 3D at the present time, Sony is far from dismissing 3D. When asked about moving to 3D in the future, Yoshida replied, “So never-say-never for the future, but for the launch of NGP our choices were based on what we believe the best choice was for us.”
