God of War is probably Sony's hottest video game property, and the company knows it. Although the much anticipated God of War III won't launch until next March, Sony today smartly announced a compilation of the first two God of War games for this holiday season. The two games will be packed onto one Blu-ray disc for the great price of $39.99.
While God of War looked fantastic for a PS2 game, now you'll be able to experience the first two games in 720p. Moreover, Sony says the visuals "have been remastered with anti-aliased graphics running at 60 frames per second for a smooth gameplay experience on the PS3 system." And, if you're into the PS3 trophy systems, Sony is adding in PlayStation Network (PSN) trophy support to the franchise for the first time, giving gamers a reason to replay these fantastic games yet again.
“We are excited today to announce God of War Collection,” said Scott Rohde, vice president, Worldwide Studios America. “Our fans spoke and we listened; thanks to our partnership with Bluepoint Games, fans and newcomers to the series can experience the epic God of War and God of War II saga in stunning 720p on PS3. This Blu-ray Disc compilation brings Kratos to PS3 even earlier than expected.”
We feel this is a wise move on Sony's part. With the new $299 price point, there is likely to be an uptick in PS3 owners this holiday season. Whetting their appetites for one of the biggest releases in Q1 2010 can't hurt, and God of War is huge enough that plenty of existing PS3 owners will want to buy the compilation to experience the graphical boost.

This is a smart move by Sony for a couple of reasons. One, it helps set up the release of God of War III on the PS3, since the three are so interconnected story-wise. Two, it gives PS3 owners another chance to play (or re-play) the PS2 God of War games since the latest version of the PS3 is not backwards compatible.
