Sony Aims At Fitness and Dance Trends With Move

Posted August 16, 2011 by M.H. Williams

Sony’s PlayStation Move hasn’t been doing as well as Microsoft’s Kinect, but that doesn’t mean Sony’s throwing in the towel.  At its Gamescom presser, Sony announced its Move-powered foray into the popular fitness and dancing genres.

The first game is Move Fitness and uses the motion controller for a wide variety of fitness-related mini-games.  Squats, a digital punching bag, stretching exercises, and even a sword fighting minigame round out the exercises shown in the trailer.  No release date or pricing for the title was given.

The second title is DanceStar Party, an extension of Sony’s SingStar line of games previously announced at E3 2011.  Players use the PlayStation Move to dance their way through 40 songs and videos by real musical artists, with more being made available for download after release.   DanceStar Party is scheduled for release in late 2011.

"DanceStar Party is not just another dancing game, just as SingStar wasn't just another singing game," said Michael Denny, SVP of Sony Worldwide Studios Europe.

It's clear that Sony is trying to capitalize on the popular dancing genre currently dominated by Ubisoft's Just Dance and Harmonix's Dance Central.
