Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode I is Sega's next chance to catch lightning in a bottle for its former flagship franchise. So it stands to reason that the company is looking to get it right this time. Sega has announced that they're extending development on the title and moving the release date to the latter half of 2010.
According to Sega, the extra time will, “allow the Development Team to focus on keeping the game high quality, continuing tuning and balancing of levels and interface and overall maintaining the kind of polish that an important game like this demands, ultimately providing fans with an unrivaled classic Sonic feel.”
Sega also confirmed that Sonic The Hedgehog 4 will be released on a platform not previously announced: Apple's iTunes App Store. Players will be able to take Sonic wherever they go on iPhone and iPod Touch, in addition to the previously announced Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and WiiWare platforms.
