Social Startup Funzio Collects $20 Million In Series A

Posted May 10, 2011 by M.H. Williams

Funzio, developer of Crime City for Facebook, announced today that it has cleared $20 million in a Series A financing round.  This first round was led by IDG Ventures in North America and IDG Capital Partners in China.  Phil Sanderson of IDG Ventures will join the board while Rick Thompson, co-founder of Playdom, remains as Chariman of Funzio’s board.

Funzio launched its first title, Crime City, in September of 2010 and the game has quickly become one of the top five Facebook games.  The game has more than 750,000 daily active users and more than seven million monthly players.  Crime City will also be available on mobile platforms later this year.

"At Funzio, we're passionate about building phenomenal games that people love playing. We feel very fortunate to have Phil Sanderson join our board because he shares our values and vision -- creating awesome cross-platform games for Facebook, iOS and Android," said Ken Chiu, Co-Founder and CEO of Funzio.

"The Funzio team is unique in that they have been in the social gaming space since its inception and created some of the biggest hits on Facebook and iPhone," said Sanderson. "Now they're transforming the industry by taking a cross-platform approach with AAA quality social games so people can play on Facebook and mobile -- two of the biggest markets."

Funzio will use the funding to triple its current development team, within immediate openings in engineering, art, and product positions.
