Social Games Will Be 'Juggernaut of Growth,' for Next Decade, says Garriott

Posted February 23, 2010 by James Brightman

Last week, Richard Garriott returned to the gaming scene with a new social media firm called Portalarium. The creator of the Ultima series and the former CEO of NCsoft Austin has been a big believer in the booming social gaming space. He thinks games on Facebook and other social networks will be a primary growth driver for the industry over the next 10 years.

"I would argue that with Ultima Online we helped build and grow the early online gaming era, which has been where all of the growth has taken place over the last decade. And I believe very strongly that right now social media games and casual games have finally found their market after decades of us trying to open that market; that really is going to be the juggernaut of growth for the next decade, I believe. Game developers need to figure that out, or they will be left behind," Garriott said.
