Sims Creator Will Wright to Receive ETC Randy Pausch Award

Posted April 26, 2011 by Ben Strauss

The prestigious Carnegie Mellon University, in partnership with the Entertainment Technology Center, will award Sims creator Will Wright with the Randy Pausch Award, named in honor of the late ETC co-founder responsible for “The Last Lecture.”

The award is given out to those who have contributed to technology in a more positive way, and Wright’s unyielding attention to artistry and design has earned him a place of recognition.  Wright had previously worked with Pausch on the development of Alice, an educational software package designed to teach the principles of programming.

"The Pausch Prize celebrates those industry professionals who have bridged the gap between right brain and left brain thinking; Will Wright personifies that ideal," said Don Marinelli, executive producer and co-founder of the ETC.

"His work manifests not only technical expertise and artist creativity, but he is legendary for games and interactive experiences that are educational and entertaining at the same time. Randy always pointed to Will Wright as the perfect role model for ETC students. It is a tremendous privilege for us to honor Will Wright with the Randy Pausch Prize."

Wright will receive the award at the Pittsburgh-based ETC on April 28 as part of the Pittsburgh Technology Council’s Design, Art & Technology Awards.  Wright will also be present at the first Building Virtual Worlds Spring Festival on April 29.
