Silicon Knights Sees 'Massive Layoffs,' 25 Personnel Remain – Report

Posted October 31, 2011 by Ben Strauss

The developer behind Eternal Darkness and Too Human has reportedly been the victim of a mass layoff.  Sources close to the story say that only a skeleton crew of 25 employees remain at their posts, despite the fact that the company had only just recently received three separate grants from Canadian government sources.

While the news remains unconfirmed, two separate and credible sources both contacted 1UP, saying that Silicon Knights was undergoing problems.  “Silicon Knights has had massive layoffs. They are now down to a core staff of 25 people." The other also added that “it may interest you to note that SK laid off all but 25 employees today."

Of course, the company has not seen the best of results in their work over these past few years.  Too Human was meant to be a rather ambitious title, slated for a full franchise push until sales figures came up short.  Reviews of the recently released X-Men: Destiny have also hampered the studio.

The layoffs were not altogether unexpected it seems, as 1UP notes that earlier comments had been made regarding the fate of the studio.  Another source mentioned on October 26 that “you might want to keep an eye on SK in the next few days. If you were connected to many of SK's directors and producers on LinkedIn, you would be noticing a very disproportionate amount of CV updating and connection-making activity. And yes, I have heard that the worst is happening. Stay tuned."

Thus far, Silicon Knights has not responded to the reports, and has vehemently maintained that no layoffs had yet occurred as of October 26.

We have contacted the studio for more information, and will update as we get word.
