Silicon Knights Gets Millions in Federal Funding

Posted April 12, 2010 by David Radd

While it hasn't been announced what the next major project is at Silicon Knights, it's clear that they're working on something big. It was revealed recently that Silicon Knights received nearly $4 million Canadian dollars ($3.78 million) from the federal government for creation of their next title.

"This is going to benefit Silicon Knights in ways that are profound and long-lasting," said Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack to the Welland Tribune [thanks GI.biz]. "We are blown away and we're happy with the support we're getting. It is something that couldn't have come at a better time."

The capital will help the Ontario developer hire 65 people almost immediately (the company currently has over 100 employees). Dyack said that their next “AAA” title will take between two and five years to develop.

"In our industry, you have to be very careful never to announce anything until the right time. We can only say it's a next generation title and a high production value game," said Dyack. "That's all we can say."

Dyack's reluctance to give anything but the most general of details likely stems from the disastrous showing of Too Human at E3 2006, which he thought in retrospect was far too early to show the game off publicly. While Dyack is remaining tight-lipped about Silicon Knights' next title, we're inclined to believe it won't be a sequel to Too Human because of the time frame – the maximum allotment of five years seems like an awful long time to be working on a sequel to a game where presumably the technical foundation had been laid in the first.
