Today, the Nickelodeon Kids and Family Games Group and its Shockwave unit announced the launch of a new virtual goods platform. The platform includes a new virtual currency called Shockwave Cash, which will allow players to purchase in-game items and personalize their gameplay in Shockwave’s online offerings.
"Adding virtual goods to Shockwave is part of our long-term strategy to provide deep, engaging content experiences across our portfolio, and create diversified revenue opportunities for game developers," said Dave Williams, SVP of Nickelodeon Kids and Family Games Group. "Shockwave is a top destination for casual gamers, and we believe virtual goods will be a great addition for users and developers who want to expand beyond traditional downloadable games."
The Shockwave virtual goods kickoff will begin with the launch of Hungry, Hungry Hippy, Let’s Get Grillin’, and Sara’s Super Spa Me. Gamers can use Shockwave Cash to purchase power-ups and vanity items for all three titles. Shockwave Cash, in tandem with Shockwave’s recent achievement system for trophy awards, will push developers farther and help them monetize their innovative gameplay experiences.
This launch follows Nickelodeon’s recent implementation of virtual goods on the Addicting Games web portal and the company’s acquisition of Social Express earlier this month. More changes will be coming to Shockwave in the coming months.
