Sex Scenes Return for God of War III

Posted February 19, 2010 by David Radd

The God of War series, well known for its gratuitous violence, has also had implied sex scenes included. While SCE Santa Monica Studios seemed initially undecided on the matter of putting a sex mini-game in God of War III, an ESRB listing indicates that one does exist in the final game.

“The game contains a sex mini-game,” reads the ESRB listing [thanks PlayStation Lifestyle]. “Players will encounter a goddess and her two hand maidens, all topless, all holding and caressing each other. If players wish to, they may join the goddess (and only the goddess) in bed. Actual sex is never depicted as the camera drifts, then fixes on the two maidens, who watch from a distance. As players respond to the on-screen prompts with button presses, the topless maidens will continue to watch, and sometimes caress. Moaning sounds from the bed can be heard throughout the sequence.”

If we had to guess, sounds like Kratos has a carnal moment with Aphrodite, who in legend did have an illicit affair with the god of war Ares.

Why is it that with games such as God of War 3 and Grand Theft Auto 4 publishers cannot add some sort of link to the game whereas once you get the game you can click it on and not have 'sex scenes' or similar scenes that you could click-on so that those that are younger and you do not want to have them access to could still have the ability to play the rest of the game ?? It could recognize the particular hardware and not let those scenes play on that particular player. Of course GoW3 is for the PS3 but those games that play on the Xbox could likely be set up the same way.
Maybe someone from IndustryGamer's could do a sort of survey seeing what other's thought of the idea, or another idea similiar to this one, and maybe bring it up to someone in the industry that actually publishes the games. Maybe this sounds just to far off to be done but I wanted an opinion about this from others. Is this idea just plain wacko or worth pursuing. I do not recall seeing this question in print before so sorry if it was. There are probably other things I would like to add to this that I cannot think of yet.
Please no witch hunts on this question, just a plain question. I am a grandparent that does not play the games and and get them for the grandkids but when I hear of 'sex' scenes I immediately change my mind. I want them to enjoy the experience of the game graphics and gameplay and so forth but not what I call the X rated stuff.
Thanks for reading this and your opinions.

How old are your grandkids? Even if you remove sex from a game, you do realize that these are very violent games and are rated by the ESRB to reflect that? Young kids should not be playing God of War or GTA.

Very much agreed with James. Any child old enough to handle the mature, graphic themes in God of War or GTA is old enough to handle very softcore sex scenes.

You don't have to play the mini-game. Usually they are just side games to earn extra points and such anyway. You could just pass it by entirely.

I'm almost surprised most games don't have a “put tops on the females” option, given how much of an issue it is in the U.S. Regardless, it's all very PG-13 stuff sex-wise in God of War – only breasts, no sex depicted on-screen and there's generally some item (like a shaking candle, vase or statute) that suggests what's going on; it's very tongue-in-cheek and frankly most games with sex are like that. It's not something that I totally get – eviscerating a centaur with a sword is fine but you show a nipple and its a catastrophe.
