Server Attack Renders Ubisoft PC Titles Unplayable

Posted March 8, 2010 by David Radd

Ubisoft's decision to release Assassin's Creed II on PC later than its console counterparts rankled many PC gamers, though the decision to include a new DRM system that required the user be online during play inspired genuine anger. User anger turned to white-hot rage over the weekend, as server issues rendered players incapable of playing legitimate copies of Assassin’s Creed II and Silent Hunter 5 at all because of a malicious attack.

“Apologies to anyone who couldn’t play ACII or SH5 yesterday. Servers were attacked which limited service from 2:30 PM to 9 PM Paris time,” wrote Ubisoft on its official Twitter page. “95% of players were not affected, but a small group of players attempting to open a game session did receive denial of service errors.”

While there have already been rumors of pirated copies of Assassin’s Creed II and Silent Hunter 5 that do not require server authentication, Ubisoft denies these reports. “We're happy to say ACII & SH5 are withstanding the efforts to crack them. We see the rumors but still confirm no valid cracked versions exist.”

These DRM systems only alienate legitimate PC gamers. It's one thing to require to user to have the game disc inside the drive when the game initiates to authenticate it, but forcing users to be online to play even the single-player, offline modes is just going too far. I will personally never play a game that uses such deception, mainly because of the intrussive measures to authenticate, and in this case require an active internet connection to play. And the sad part is that I was really hoping to play this one. I guess I'll just rent a console version from my library, or gamefly, becasue I certainly won't be purchasing one.

However, the developers have stated that they won't release a game every 2-3 years and the game director says that if he had it his way, there won't be another God of War title for ten years. So shut up. free internet fax software

Are you stupid? They never said GoW2 was the last in the series, it ended on a cliffhanger and it was always known there would be a third one. And Harry Potter? Seriously?identity theft america
