Nintendo 3DS Developer Says 2D Games Feel Flat After Working with 3D

Posted August 5, 2010 by David Radd

Masahiro Sakurai is leading the charge for the 3DS with the game Kid Icarus Uprising. He likes the 3D so much, he may never return to regular 2D development.

"Yes this is indeed my first 3D game but I have a feeling that it's going to be hard to go back [to 2D]" he said to ONM. "For example when you watch Avatar in 3D you take notice of the 3D element initially but then as the movie goes on you forget about the 3D novelty as your eyes get used to it and simply enjoy it for what it is."

"That's the nature of the way we get used to things as they become familiar,” he described. “The problem is that when you go back to 2D after 3D it feels flat. So in terms of game development I would think that going back to 2D after working on a 3D project may be very difficult for me."

I don't buy that this is 3D. If it was they would have shown it on the big screen since hence you don't need glasses according to Nintendo. So why not show it. If it was 3D then none of us would need glasses to watch 3D on tv or on PlayStation 3. To me it is 2D graphics made to look 3D. On a small screen its not hard to make them look like they are popping out.

Do some research, no technology exists that is true 3D, it is simply a trick by placing two nearly identical images near each other, your eyes blend the image making it appear in 3D. The reason you need glasses for TV's is becuase of the large size of the screeen, the glasses help your eyes blend the two images.

Nintendo's 3D technology is not revolutionary, Cell Phones in certain parts of Asia have been using 3D technology for years, this is however the first game system to be in 3D without the use of glasses.

Your suggestion that the system is not 3D is not logical, how in could Nintendo have pulled the wool over the eyes of all the attendees at E3? I've played the system its 3D.
