While creating a direct sequel to the acclaimed and phenomenally successful Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 would seem like a no-brainier for Infinity Ward, community manager Robert Bowling has indicated that the studio will eventually “do something else” and work had not begun on the sequel. According to a report at VG247, Infinity Ward is choosing now as the time to “do something else.”
While the source said that Infinity Ward has started work on a non-Call of Duty title, nothing else was revealed about the new game. It was suggested that a Canadian developer, like Prototype-creator Radical Entertainment, could be picking up the slack on Call of Duty, while Sledgehammer Games, led by former Visceral Games heads Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, was also mentioned.

Can't they do "something else" and Modern Warfare 3?

Depending on production schedules and their bandwidth, maybe yes, maybe no. I'm not sure if the team size at IW would be big enough to tackle two AAA projects at once.

Now if only they'd find a new publisher.
