Recent reports have suggested that Infinity Ward is not working on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. While no information came out about what exactly Infinity Ward was doing with their time, Destructoid, citing "industry sources," is reporting that the game will be an MMO.
Key personnel from Sony Online Entertainment and Blizzard have apparently been hired to help create this new title, and plans are in place for Call of Duty's retail releases to continue in an annual fashion.
While this departure from retail shooter title releases might seem a bit shocking, especially for a developer owned by its publisher (Activision), it would end up making a whole lot more sense if it was a Call of Duty themed MMO, generating subscription revenue every month for one of gaming's biggest franchises.
