Rumor: Call of Duty: Vietnam Draws on Classic Cinema

Posted January 7, 2010 by David Radd

While reports are swirling on what Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward might be doing with their time, the next Call of Duty title will actually be coming from Treyarch. Reports that had previously suggested that the seventh main Call of Duty game would be set during the Vietnam War were reinforced by a story from Abstract360.

Citing “reliable sources,” the report says that Treyarch's next Call of Duty title will be more story driven than Call of Duty: World at War. Additionally, war films such as Platoon, Apocalypse Now, and Full Metal Jacket will serve as inspirations for the game's content.

While nothing 100 percent reliable has come out about the next major Call of Duty release, it seems highly likely that it will have some sort of Cold War setting.

I'm not sure I'd want to be in Treyarch's shoes right now. The series will be coming off of an unprecedented high and (as rumors go) they're set to take it into an unpopular and socially looked-down-upon war.

The issue that I see with a Vietnam centered game is what I would imagine would be a lack of historical interest from non-American consumers which could hurt the game's sales figures.

That being said, I personally look forward to trudging through the jungles of Vietnam and possibly Cambodia with the series. If Treyarch wants to one up the airport scene in MW2 I'm sure they could make the player take a trip to My Lai... not that that's necessarily a good thing but it's a possibility I'm sure.
