Recent discussion of a Harmonix buyout have made many believe that Activision would eventually pick up Harmonix and reunite the developer with the Guitar Hero franchise. Today, we learned that an investment firm has taken a hold of the developer. Columbus Nova has acquired Harmonix for an undisclosed sum.
Harmonix’s John Drake commented on the acquisition on the Rock Band forums saying “We're excited to be returning to our roots as an independent and privately owned studio. As for that it means for you, the DLC schedule marches on for Rock Band, we will continue our support of previously released titles and we're hard at work on some unannounced projects that we think you're going to be pumped about.”
Harmonix has also been given a new name: Harmonix-SBE Holdings LLC. While Harmonix is based in the Boston area, new owner Columbus Nova is a New York firm.
We're definitely curious to see how Rock Band and other games progress under this new ownership structure.
