Report: Beyond Good & Evil 2 'On Hold For Now'

Posted August 25, 2009 by David Radd

Fans of the cult hit Beyond Good & Evil were elated when a teaser trailer was revealed for a sequel and were sent into fits of jubilation when an Ubisoft internal test trailer leaked onto the Internet. Still, it was not a good sign when Ubisoft's Laurent Detoc was evasive a couple months ago about the whether Beyond Good & Evil 2 would ever see the light of day.

"I didn't say there's definitely going to be another game," said Detoc to IndustryGamers. "I said something had leaked, which means we've been working on some Beyond Good and Evil stuff, but whether there's going to be another game or not, that's something for the future."

Now, Gamesyde's Colin Solal Cardo is indicating that the game is no longer in production. "I got confirmation at Cologne's Gamescom that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is on hold for now," said Cardo via Twitter. "No idea if it's [definitive] or temporary but it sucks."

This is sad news, if perhaps unsurprising. Plenty of games get canceled mid-development, but few are for sequels so desperately wanted as this – hopefully the game will reemerge at some point down the road. In the meantime, we've pinged Ubisoft for official word and we'll let you know.

This is so disappointing. I was really looking forward to hearing something at least at E3. I was planning to buy this game this year at full price as most of the big games coming I will not be buying. That leaked trailer looked great. This is really too bad. Oh well moving on. There are tons of other games coming out. I think canceling this game would be a bad move on Ubisoft's part.

I wouldn't give up just yet. Ubisoft still hasn't gotten back to us, but I'm not so sure they're abandoning the IP.

Ancel had talked about how much he was excited about doing another BG&E, but there are issues beyond him wanting to make it and certain fans wanting it desperately. Sometimes games just don't come together and never see the light of day – it wouldn't surprise me if this was the case here.
