Rare Says There 'Isn't A Need' to Reboot Old Franchises

Posted March 29, 2010 by David Radd

Depending on whom you ask, when you mention Rareware to gamers they might think of classic titles like Battletoads or R.C. Pro-Am or they might be reminded of seminal shooters like Goldeneye 007 or Perfect Dark. Still, Rare does not want to be defined by the games of the past and Studio Director Mark Betteridge thinks there “isn’t a need” to explore older franchises.

“[We] would only go back to older franchises if we saw an opportunity to make the product in a different way that would do justice to [them],” said Betteridge to Develop. “It’d be nice to go back to these projects that have been successful in the past, but that doesn’t mean we will.”

Rare has yet to produce a true blockbuster for Xbox 360 since Microsoft purchased the developer, but it appears that the U.K. studio will be heavily involved in creating experiences for Project Natal, which could provide an opportunity to introduce some fresh IP.

Damn it. Gives a Banjo platformer. I don't have 'a need' to flail my arms around like some spastic monkey.

They should really make a new Battletoads or Killer Instinct game. Those would sell very well for them.

I know a colleague that insisted at one point in time that Killer Instinct 3 was absolutely coming to the Xbox 360. As the truly notable title of Rare's past slip further into memory, the unfortunate fact is that the company's current legacy is Viva Pinata and the Xbox 360 Avatars, not the classic "core" titles of yesteryear.
