When Quake Zero (now Quake Live) was first announced, the browser-based game was going to be supported by in-game ads. However, during his QuakeCon keynote address, John Carmack indicated that the game would be receiving a premium subscription service.
"The in-game advertising stuff has not been big business," he said, according to Shacknews. "That's not going to be able to carry the project."
Carmack was quick to add that id Software would not make subscriptions mandatory for Quake Live. Premium features include the ability for players to run their own private servers for the game. "Quake Live is gonna be Quake Live for the foreseeable future," he said. "It's only just now that we're going to be able to put it to the test."
