PSP is Go

Posted June 2, 2009 by David Radd

During their E3 Press Conference, Sony officially unveiled their PSP Go console.  The existence of the device had been well known beforehand; SCEA President Jack Tretton began the show with a deprecating joke about how Sony was the industry leader in press leaks.

SCE CEO Kaz Hirai commented that the PSP Go will not replace the regular PSP nor the UMD.  As suspected, the PSP Go will feature a sliding screen to hide the face buttons, Bluetooth wireless and feature 16 GB of internal storage space.  The PSP Go will also be "50 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter" than the original PSP.

To go along with the launch of the PSP Go, there will be a new app for the PSN on PC called Media Go.  The service will have an app called SenseMe, which will pick out music automatically for the user.  PSN's video service (with over 1900 movies and 9400 tv shows available) will now be natively available on the PSP.  Showtime, G4, TNA and Starz were all announced as new partners for the video service.

Hirai noted that they have lowered the cost of the PSP dev kits by 80 percent to make them more accessible to developers.  All PSP game releases from now on will be available via UMD and digital distribution.   The PSP Go will be available for $250 on October 1 in North America.
