Data from tracking firm Media Create reveals that both the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP were the only pieces of hardware to break past the million sales mark in Japan year-to-date through June.
The DS sales figures account for all models - the DSi LL, DSi and DS Lite - whereas the PSP sales figures account for both the PSP and PSP Go.
The figures currently stand at:
1. DS - 1,180,325
2. PSP - 1,101,666
3. Wii - 818,945
4. PS3 - 756,325
5. Xbox 360 - 105,969
6. PS2 - 45,372
The PSP has clearly been making an impact in Japan. The sales figures put the PSP only 79K units behind DS for the year. What this also shows is that the PSP has beaten out the Wii and other consoles with relative ease, by a margin of almost 300K units.
Though the PSP has never been that big of a success in the United States, the Japanese market has been incredibly receptive of the handheld device. Interestingly enough, the PSP Go is still not making sales in any market it seems, and the handheld was responsible for only 1,024 units sold last week, whereas the standard PSP sold 24,685 units.
