PS3 Upgrading to Disc-less Netflix in October

Posted July 22, 2010 by James Brightman

Microsoft's Xbox 360 was the first console to receive Netflix's streaming video service, and while both the PS3 and Wii feature the service now as well, Xbox 360 remains the only one to actually have the software built into the dashboard. That will be changing soon, however, as Netflix revealed on a conference call this week that PS3 owners will be able to toss the Netflix disc away in October.

"Before our next call in October, we expect to be launching a major new version of our Sony PS3 user interface which doesn't require a disc and is dynamically updated continuously with the latest Netflix UI improvements," said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings.

Most analysts believe that Netflix has had to use discs for PS3 and Wii because of an exclusivity agreement with Microsoft. While the discs certainly work, it'll be much nicer for PS3 owners to have access to Netflix right from the XMB. Netflix did not say if or when they would do the same for the Wii.
