PS3 Tops Metacritic's Game Platform Power Rankings

Posted December 11, 2009 by David Radd

The PS3 has had much better sales success since launching the cheaper PS3 Slim and now Metacritic is saying the PS3 also improved as far as software quality goes. The review aggregate score site gave the crown to the PS3 in what they dub their first annual “Game Platform Power Rankings.”

“The Power Rankings combine a variety of factors — all involving the quality and quantity of titles released during the year — to rank the six major gaming platforms. Although Xbox 360 finished with the highest number of positively-reviewed titles (88 games receiving a Metascore of 75 or higher), and though Nintendo’s Wii had the largest total number of releases (a whopping 362, or almost one per day), the PS3 console showed the best overall game quality for the year,” reads the article. “Among other factors, five of the 10 highest-scoring games in 2009 (for any platform) were PS3 titles, including the year’s top game: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.”

Metacritic noted that the Wii had the worst showing quality wise, with only 28 percent of games receiving a “good” rating and a median “metascore” of 67 percent. They also stated that they will follow up with a report on the connection (or lack thereof) between review scores and sales in January.

EEDAR's Jesse Divnich discussed the topic earlier this year at IndustryGamers about improving scores for Wii titles and the simultaneous high percentage of un-reviewed Wii games.

Legitimate third-party publishers have got to be frustrated with the overall low metacritic rating on the Wii and its contribution to first-party success.

Good point. Some third parties put out some good stuff on Wii, but the overall atmosphere of crap games drags the ecosystem down.

Uncharted 2 deserves the praise it gets. Modern Warfare 2 is definitely a high quality game but it is sad that Uncharted 2 does not get sales of equal volume.
