Research and Markets has released a new report on the growth trends of video consumer devices, including gaming consoles. From a geographical standpoint, the report found that Sony's PS3 is doing a good job increasing its global footprint.
"The PS3 is dominant in Japan and Korea, and as of June 2008, has begun to outsell the Xbox 360 in Europe. It is also steadily increasing its market share in all other regions across the globe, including in the North American market," the report said, while noting that the Xbox 360 still sells more than the PS3 in North America, and consequently, 360 sales still beat PS3 in total worldwide sales.
Even so, PS3 sales have been surging (44% over the holidays) and SCEA senior vice president of Marketing and PlayStation Network, Peter Dille, recently insisted that PS3 will eventually overtake Xbox 360.
Research and Markets also noted that the Americas market should remain the largest for all the console makers through 2013. That said, "The high population density and rapid uptake of technology in countries such as Japan and Korea, and to a lesser extent in Singapore and Hong Kong, see a disproportionately high level of console sales compared to the rest of the world. Console sales are also fairly high in Western Europe and are growing considerably in the emerging markets of Eastern Europe, Latin America, and other areas in Asia."
Speaking of emerging markets, Sony's aging PS2 hardware is expected to continue to be a top seller in those regions but will drop off considerably in more established markets. In fact, the global sales dip for 2009 was blamed largely on the precipitous declines of PS2 software in the U.S., U.K. and Japan.

Let's take the Wii off the table - nothing is catching that. If it continues to perform well, however, it won't seem like an also ran compared to the Xbox 360. If this generation is going to be as long as it looks like its going to be, there's plenty of time to sell systems.

Am sorry The 1 2 p but i didn't know it was a race so what do the winner get ? a cookie ? look if your a fanboy for Microsoft or Sony you can't say nothing because second and third is still last place lol if your not first your last . Now i got that out the way this is great news for Sony there console sell should grow because of there game line up in 2010 . Microsoft has been doing well on the DLC contain just need to work a little more on games because that what new buyer look for in a system now and the wii keep doing what you been doing you see the 1 2 p no hate just love for the big 3 .

Microsoft were desperate this gen, they showed that by rushing a console out a year early with a 110% failure rate. The Xbox 360 desperately needed the year's head start over the PS3, because the PS3's games are far superior and therefore make the console a more attractive buy, as recent hardware sales are showing.
For the 360, it was doomed from the moment it launched, it will finish this gen in third place. The year's head start merely postponed Microsoft's final judgment.

Cowboyd Cbd, I wasn't showing no hate for Sony. They are in last place in every market(including total worldwide sales) except for Japan/Asia. So if you're in last place where else can you go? They certainly can't go lower so if they are going to move it's nowhere but up.

@ 1 2 p 1 there is no such thing as a console race you can't compare the ps3 360 and wii lol it's like comparing a car boat and jet lol all there all so different . 2 if we go along with what you are saying and do compare them then the wii 50 million , 360 35 million ( can we trust this number ) and ps3 30 million (can we trust this number ) . if we go by that the 360 and ps3 are in last place so there nowhere to go but up on both consoles not just one , do you think Microsoft and Sony was thinking 5 years ago they were behind the wii ? lol i don't think so.

Actually Cowboyd, Microsoft can go down or up, depending on the market. In Japan/Asia they can go nowhere but up but in the US and Europe they want to go up to beat the Wii(which will NEVER happen) but they can also go down if Sony starts outselling them in those markets.
Finally, while it may not have a direct effect on you or me, there most certainly is a console race. Why else would the Sony and Microsoft reps constantly talk about beating one another or catching up to the other anytime they get quoted for news stories. But regardless, this race was won by the Wii atleast two years ago. Nobody could catch the Wii at this point. Microsoft and Sony are fighting for second place but Sony is on the bottom looking up and Microsoft is trying to maintain their position.

@ 1 2 LOL no one care what Sony and Microsoft say about each other but fanboy , only fanboy believe there a console race . No matter how you spin it second and third is still last place lol no one happy about being second or third in any form of business or life .

I think it's good for them to concentrate on emerging markets as they will be the sustained markets for the future. At the end of the day console sales mainly come down to 2 things. First is the price of the console itself and second is the line-up of new games available. If they continue to release the latest
cutting edge games then console slaes will increase globally.

Well if youre already a PC gamer, that would be the logical choice...since there really isnt that much of a difference between a 360 library and a PC library.
I acknowledge the online improvements 360 pioneered, but it's beyond me how they STILL haven't redesigned their flawed hardware. PS3 came out a year later, and they redesigned a more efficient console. Putting out a 3 year warranty doesn't "fix" the issue.
