Since the new PS3 Slim went on sale for $299 on September 1, the Sony console has gone on to reach 1 million unit sales worldwide in just three weeks, based on Sony Computer Entertainment's own internal estimates.
Sony Computer Entertainment America has repeatedly stated that sales of PS3 have been up 300% at top retailers here in the U.S. and CEO Jack Tretton said he "couldn't be more optimistic about our fortunes for the rest of the year and for the future." In fact, he noted that if the sales continue at this pace for PS3, "it is conceivable that there will be product shortages."
With Nintendo having just dropped the Wii to $199, which will lead to a nice sales boost, and Microsoft benefiting from blockbusters like Halo 3: ODST among other big titles in the next few months, it should be a very interesting console battle to watch this holiday season.
