In a recent interview with 5BY5, Valve CEO Gabe Newell says the company would like to see Sony's PlayStation 3 become “more open like a Mac” rather than “more closed like a Gamecube.”
“Platform investments, like the Mac, are difficult because you have to be aware of what direction that platform is moving. We need to target platforms that do a better job of looking like where we want to be in a few years,” said Newell. “We would love to see the PS3 be more open like a Mac than more closed like a Gamecube. It makes it easier to justify those investments if that were the case.”
Valve has never been a big fan of the PS3, to the point that most PlayStation fans see them as public enemy number one. A Valve employee mentioned earlier this year that the company was looking into developing for the PS3, but it seems like the relationship remains frosty.

Well they made the Orange Box available for the PS3 so it's not like they aren't trying.

Valve wasn't personally responsible for the Orange Box on PS3, which is part of the reason they're so frustrated when you ask them about that version.
Also, this statement by Newell is just confusing to me - what exactly do they want to be "open"? The PS3 is a game console with multi-media features, it's going to be pretty closed. Mac is a multi-purpose personal computer. Besides that the Xbox 360 is pretty "closed" too, but Valve still supports that. Look, Valve, if you just hate the PS3 and won't develop for it, say it, but don't toy with the issue.
