While Nintendo recently estimated that it sold 3 million Wii units during the month of December in the U.S. alone, Sony Computer Entertainment today announced that it sold 3.8 million PS3s across the globe from the last week in November through Christmas week. That represents a 76% increase compared to the same period last year. Considering how the PS3 had struggled in previous years, the sales surge of course marks the highest holiday total for Sony's console yet.
Sony continues to grow its PlayStation Network as well, and the company said that it's now achieved 38 million registered PSN accounts. Looking at this year, PS3 could be even stronger, and indeed analyst Colin Sebastian believes it'll be the only console to actually see growth.
"In 2010, SCEI will continue to deploy various measures to further expand the PS3 software line-up, including highly anticipated titles such as God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, MAG,Heavy Rain and ModNation Racers. The company will also vigorously enhance the network content and services, while tapping into a wider audience through the introduction of a new Motion Controller supported with a variety of software titles as well as delivering outstanding 3D experience in homes with 3D stereoscopic games and movies, that is possible only on the PS3 platform," Sony said in a release.
