During the Tokyo Game Show this week, Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai told Reuters that the PS3 hardware is seeing even better sales than the company had anticipated. Hirai noted that the console remains on target to sell 15 million unit during the fiscal year ending next March. "As of the end of August, sales look a bit better than we expected," he said.
Sony also confirmed that globally they've sold 38 million PS3 units to date and 62 million PSPs. Meanwhile, it appears that a much rumored PSP2 is definitely in developers' hands, so we're hoping to hear more official word from Sony in the near future.
Hirai also noted that 80 percent of the 38 million PS3 units are currently connected to the PlayStation Network, but the company wants to see all 100 percent connected. Microsoft has 23 million users on its Xbox Live system (as of January 2010), which just got a nice boost thanks to the blockbuster launch of Halo: Reach.
