PS3 is 'Incredibly Important' to Valve

Posted August 20, 2010 by Ben Strauss

The PS3 has admittedly gotten a bad treatment from the Valve team, says project manager Eirk Johnson. The developer has not been the most forthright in producing a true “Valve experience” for PS3 owners, and Johnson hopes to change that with Portal 2.

Speaking with CVG, Johnson discussed how Valve is hoping to make amends. "PS3 is incredibly important to us," said Johnson. "We don't feel that the PS3 users had the Valve experience that we like to deliver." He says they're looking to "fix everything wrong" from previous titles, and Steamworks will play a large role in working out those problems. "We're looking forward to solving that and having Steam on that platform is also incredibly valuable to us. In a lot of ways that is the way we define a customer having a good experience because it's the way that we keep talking to that customer over time."

The PS3 has been something of an oddity to Valve it would seem. Valve boss Gabe Newell has been altogether dismissive of the PS3, and the Orange Box was not very well received by many who played it on the console. E3 came as a big surprise for many Sony fans as Gabe Newell made a surprise appearance, apologizing for the past. He hopes to make amends by saying that Portal 2 for PS3 will be the “best version on any console.”
