Sony opened the PS3 portion of their press conference by showing a video montage of previously announced Blu-ray and PSN titles, including Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, White Knight Chronicles, Uncharted 2 and Pixel Junk Shooter.
After the montage, a new property called Agent was announced. The PS3 exclusive title is being made by Rockstar and will focus on spy skullduggery in the 1970s. A live demo was then given for Asssasin's Creed 2, which showed off the game's detailed environment, disarming techniques, use of the flying machine and killing two people simultaneous with hidden blades.
A long trailer for Final Fantasy XIII was then shown, followed by the announcement of Final Fantasy XIV's existence. The game will be an MMORPG and will launch exclusively on the PS3. We're sure some people will be very excited about this, but we're wondering if the PS3 version of game just won't be an adjunct to the PC version.

So Final Fantasy XIV is not really Final Fantasy XIV, it's Final Fantasy Online 2. Square Enix should not count MMO's as part of the main Final Fantasy series.

It's a bit weird to have those online only titles inserted into the middle of a single player, story driven series, especially since so many gamers will never experience them just for that reason.

Actually this is not wierd at all. Each Final Fantasy is it's own game, with completely differing stories, UI, and character advancement. The only time we have additional parts like XII and FFVII Crisis Core is when it is based in the same world with existing characters. If this is wierd, then why is it not wierd that each iteration has nothing to do with the next, not to mention that it's named "Final Fantasy". How can it have a sequel at all?
In order to be a final fantasy, all it needs is Chocobos, Moogles or Mogs, a character named Cid, the presence of air ships, Summons, and then the common item and spell names of course. FFXI has all of these and I'm sure that XIV will also.
