PS3 Firmware Update Blocks PSJailbreak

Posted September 7, 2010 by Ben Strauss

Sony is introducing an update to the PlayStation 3’s system software that is designed to prevent the recent PSJailbreak piracy hack from working.

The discreetly released 3.42 update, a required update for all users hoping to access the PlayStation Network, will be introduced without much discussion. The update has been designed to prevent the PSJailbreak security bypass from working. Those machines that are offline will still be able to use the hack, and concerns that the download might be reverse-engineered are still present.

“Yes, people have tried it and the Jailbreak no longer works," said Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter.

"3.42 is the only way to access PSN, so in Sony's world you have to upgrade. However, for now it looks like people who have the Jailbreak are sticking to 3.41 and using a proxy server bypass to remain online.”

"Going forward, the hackers will be attempting to reverse engineer future firmwares and producing custom versions that keep the exploit working."

Sony recently won a permanent injunction against the sale of the devices in Australia, and is currently pursuing a ban in other regions. The PSJailbreak has been the main focus of attention, but the alternative PSgroove has also been affected by the firmware update.
