As a company both in the electronics business and video games, Sony is hoping the hype surrounding 3D technology will give it a boost. Sony will be updating the PS3 firmware in the near future to make the console 3D-compatible, and the first batch of 3D-enabled games are expected to launch this June alongside Sony's 3D TV push.
Today the company revealed that purchasers of the Sony HX803 (the company's first 3D TV) will receive a voucher to download four 3D games from the PlayStation Network: Wipeout HD, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, PAIN, and Super Stardust HD. Separate glasses will need to be purchased, as they're not packed in with the television.
At the moment, this deal is specific to Europe and has not been announced for North America. We wouldn't be surprised to see a similar deal here, however; Sony is going to need to do everything it can to entice consumers. Many consumers just recently upgraded to HDTV, and the 3D TVs won't be cheap - it may be too much for most people to consider in this economy.
It may take some time for 3D in the home to truly take off (if it ever does), but Sony remains confident of course. Sony Computer Entertainment recently said it's been getting enthusiastic support from developers. "I think [3D gaming uptake is] going to depend on the uptake of 3D televisions. We're not going to spend crazy, crazy amounts of money [on 3D games] expecting everyone tomorrow to have 3D TVs, clearly. But, we believe this is the future, and three or four years from now, you won't be able to buy a television that doesn't have a 3D capability," remarked Ian Bickerstaff, SCE's senior engineer on stereoscopic 3D.
