Prince of Persia Movie Director Does Not Believe Games Can Create Enough Emotion

Posted July 29, 2010 by Ben Strauss

Film director Mike Newell, known most recently for the Prince of Persia movie, believes that video games simply cannot convey emotion or storytelling elements as well as movies.

Though he admits that he knows almost nothing about games, he has been rather adamant about his position that video games simply could not develop a dramatic storyline that would engage users.

Speaking with CVG, Newell stated that the only way that he could make a Prince of Persia movie that he was proud of would have been to remove the video game from the IP.

Admitting that he has not played any video games considered by many to be “emotionally engaging,” he continues to believe that video games are played by those with ‘glazed eyes’ and are nothing near the ‘journey’ that a movie provides.

What a fool. I don't understand how people like this (Ebert, anyone?) can blind themselves to the world around them. He probably remembers video gaming from its infancy, where storlyines were all but absent and emotion was far from sincere. But to ignore the past 20 years of development and insipred achievement that's taken place in the industy is assinine.

I'm sure he'd say that movies have greatly advanced in scope and ability to convey emotion since 1985, so maybe he's just ignorant to the current state of gaming. I doubt it's more than pomposity, but at least there's the CHANCE that he's just ignorant.

Sit this toolbag down with a copy of Bioshock and have him harvest a little sister, or have him play through Gears 2 and see if he's "engaged" when Dom is reunited with Maria...

Someone needs to go play a Bioware game, they invoke emotion from me, as do many other games.

"Though he admits that he knows almost nothing about games,"
"Admitting that he has not played any video games considered by many to be “emotionally engaging,""
Then why the hell is he even talking? You don't know anything about a subject yet making a definite opinion about it doesn't make much sense.
