Porn Distributor Wants Adult Films on PlayStation Network

Posted September 9, 2009 by David Radd

It's been said that one of the main reasons that Blu-ray was able to prevail in its format war with HD DVD was that it won the support from the pornographic film business, and now Sony might receive another boost from the adult film industry. With DDM.tv launching an adult movie service for the PS3 in Japan, Vivid Entertainment founder and co-chairman Steven Hirsch said he'd like to see HD porn available in all territories.

“[DDM’s launch] is a good start," said Hirsch to MCV. "We hope that Sony will allow adult movies to be downloaded worldwide. As long as proper age verification is in place there is no reason why consumers should not be allowed to view adult movies on any device that they desire.

“It’s too early to say to what extent this could help our business, but it certainly has real potential,” he added.

Game companies have to walk a fine line when it comes to matters like this: while there would no doubt be demand for downloadable porn movies on PS3, opening PSN up to such films would invite criticism from certain circles and would cause a serious headache for Sony and the entire game industry in the U.S.

Haha. Now why would Buffdaily247 say that? Hmm...

If Sony is serious about the PS3 outpacing the PS2, this might be the one trump card that they've got that could help them achieve that. Lots of people are quick to show their disapproval of porn, but behind closed doors, they enjoy it just as much as anyone. If handled properly, this could be a goldmine for the PSN.

There is no "handling it properly." Americans are puritanical, and Sony and the whole industry would be pummeled by Fox news and a host of other mainstream media. It probably wouldn't be worth it to Sony.

HD-dvd was the format that supported porn films first, not the other way around. That bit is wrong. So despite getting an early advantage with porn, HD-dvd still lost the format wars. So I don't see this helping Sony much, especially in the US.
