Pokemon Yellow App Rises to No. 2 Slot, Gets Pulled

Posted February 22, 2012 by David Radd

A game called Pokemon Yellow recently launched on the App Store, “developed” by a company called Home of Anime. Before the $0.99 app was pulled, it rose all the way to number 2 on the paid apps charts.

Despite numerous reader reviews complaining that the app crashed soon after launching, it was estimated that it made over $10,000 before it was removed from the App Store.

The interest in a broken, illegal version of an old Pokemon game highlights the disconnect between Nintendo's current strategy (which says Nintendo games will only release on Nintendo systems) and obvious demand from consumers that want Nintendo games on their mobile phones.
